Into the 3rd day of Paeds elective at KKH.. decided to head home early to rest cos I tink i caught a bug from one of the kids. Yikes.

Had a rather busy weekend catching up with different groups of people.. Managed to catch the movie "Away From Her" at the PictureHouse, The Cathay. Now, I'm not usually the culture-vulture-arty type of person who would catch such flicks, but hey, since a friend did the booking, might as well watch it?

*Spoiler Alert*

The movie is centres around this elderly gentleman, whose wife is afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease. She chooses to move into one of those elderly care centres, and is separated from her husband for the initial 30 days. During this 30 days, due to the loss of her short term memory, she finds herself falling into a relationship with another elderly man and fellow-Alzheimer's Disease sufferer.

Hence, one can only imagine the heartbreak and torture the real husband experiences when he comes back to visit her at the first available moment. Despite all his attempts to jog her memory about him, she simply does not remember him, and falls into depression when her "partner" is taken out of the home due to financial reasons. The husband then goes on a quest to restore happiness to his wife, by making out with the "partner"'s real wife, so that she would let her husband, i.e. the "partner", return to his wife - in effect, a spousal swop of sorts.

Nobody's a winner in this sad equation.. Does the husband gain happiness with the rightful wife of the other partner? Is the wife happy with the spousal swop - since her partner obviously is also in love with the other woman.

It seems that only the couple with Alzheimer's, ensconced in their own little world, so deeply in love, yet oblivious to the torture they are putting to their real loved ones around them - yet by no means their fault - are truly happy? But are they truly? For the movie closes with the AD wife having one of her transient better days - when she is able to recognize her husband, and reaffirms her love for him - yet the irony of it was that it was at that very same moment that the husband had brought back the AD partner so that the 2 could live blissfully in their own world. Haiz.
